This study aims to address the challenges currently facing the visual arts sector and how creativity, visual art, and crafts are interconnected through the dynamics of the creative economy to promote inclusion and cultural diversity, while simultaneously fostering economic and social development. To this end, a review and analysis of the literature on these topics was conducted, considering the most relevant authors. The main findings define and expose specific situations of exclusion and marginalization within the visual arts and crafts sector in Mexico; the creative capacity and potential for social and human development inherent in these artistic activities; and how they could be linked to the economic framework of the creative industries. Whenever artisans, artists, and local cultural agents can integrate their initiatives into the processes of the creative economy, greater participation of this sector in the regional economy will be achieved, along with greater social integration of these individuals as active participants in their communities.
