Family settings and gender in the southern Mexico state

Resumen

Apoyándonos en la noción de “configuraciones familiares” se indaga sobre el
impacto en la forma de organización de hogares y familias que registran experiencia
migratoria a Estados Unidos en el contexto de la región sur del Estado
de México. Se presenta a la familia en permanente ajuste en su organización en
función de la presencia o ausencia de algunos de sus miembros; la intensidad
de los cambios generados por la migración depende de quiénes sean los migrantes,
si son mujeres o son hombres quienes se ausentan. A partir de entrevistas
en profundidad a jefes/jefas de hogares con migrantes se encuentra que
las implicaciones para el grupo doméstico son diferentes dadas las relaciones
de poder y de género en los hogares.

Abstract
Relying on the notion of “family construction” we investigate the impact in
the form of household organization and families in which it were recorded
migration experiences to the United States in the context of the southern
region of the State of Mexico. The family is presented in its permanent way
of organization based on the presence or absence of some of its members, the
intensity of the generated changes for migration depends on who migrates,
if is the woman or man who are absent . Through interviews in depth to the
heads of households with migrants we find that the implications for domestic
groups are different given the different power relations and gender in homes.
