Migración internacional y empoderamiento de la mujer Renato Salas Alfaro

Resumen

Este trabajo explora la forma en que las esposas adquieren poder cuando los esposos migran al extranjero. Es evidente que adquieren más responsabilidades, pero eso mismo las lleva a tomar decisiones propias, ingresar al mercado laboral, aprender a controlar los recursos del hogar, y la expectativa es que eso mismo les lleva a adquirir poder en la relación marital. Al retorno del marido, ellas pueden mantener ese poder o cederlo, afrontar fricciones, violencia o gestionar una convivencia domestica equilibrada. Con este fin, se realizaron diez entrevistas con esposas de migrantes en Toluca, estado de México. Los resultados apuntan a la existencia de cuatro formas de poder: mujeres que adquieren poder en ausencia del esposo pero no lo reconocen, mujeres que adquieren poder en ausencia del marido y lo ceden cuando aquel retorna, mujeres que ganan poder en ausencia y lo mantienen al retorno, y mujeres que siempre han tenido poder en el hogar.

This paper analyses in an exploratory way, how the wives of migrants are empowered when they are abroad. When they left home acquire more responsibilities but also make decisions, entering the labour market, they learn to control household resources; the expectation is that this leads them to acquire power in the marital relationship. At return of her husbands, they can retain this power or deliver it, face friction, domestic violence or manage better balanced coexistence. To check what happens, ten interviews with wives of migrants were carried out in Toluca. The results exhibit four types of empowerments; women that get power but do not notice it, women who gain power in absence but cede it when her husband returns, women that get power in absence and keep it at return, and women who have always had power in the household.
